Problems
Through user research, I found problems with a lack of cognitive elements and inefficiencies. The flow was a bit confusing and difficult to navigate. Users had a hard time following the instructions within onboarding while creating or restoring a wallet.
Lack of cognitive factors and visual language.
User drop due to cumbersome process.
No confirmation screen after onboarding is complete.
Goal
"How might we make the onboarding flow streamlined but user-friendly to reduce user friction and increase engagement?"

User research

To understand what users think about current onboarding, I've started usability testing with both novice and advanced users. The main purpose of this usability testing was to find out where users struggled during the onboarding process of setting up their Brave Wallet.

Findings about novice users

Novice users felt the process of re-entering the 12 recovery phrases* cumbersome and were most likely to skip this process
Novice users thought the whole process was not easy to follow and unreliable.
Novice users didn't know what to do after onboarding.
*A recovery phrase, also known as a recovery phrase or seed phrase, is a list of 12 to 24 words generated by your crypto wallet. You use this phrase to recover your wallet in the event that you misplace it, damage it, it gets stolen or becomes otherwise inaccessible.

Findings about advanced users

Advanced users found that the process of re-entering the recovery phrase when creating a wallet is inefficient.
Advanced users were expected to be able to paste recovery phrases using the "copy" button.
After onboarding, the most used feature was the ability to "deposit" from another wallet.

Competitor analysis

I looked at the interfaces and processes of several market-leading wallet services (Coinbase wallet, Phantom, Metamask). Here's what I got:
1. Simplifies the step of entering a 12-recovery phrase, giving users the option to skip
2. Inducing users to follow tasks through visual language easily
3. Confirmation screen with “what they have done so far” and a clear explanation of the next steps

Ideation

Final outcome

Prototype

1. Landing page
2. Password creation
3. Recovery phrase
4. Restore
5. Import from Metamask

If MetaMask Wallet is already installed in the Brave browser, it will automatically detect the wallet. Users can connect to their wallets via MetaMask’s password.

Next step

Conduct usability testing with new UI
Responsive design on mobile and tablet
Design portfolio screen to be more intriguing after onboarding

Impact: post-launch

- Brave Wallet usage and user engagement for creating a new wallet has been increased after launch.
- New users and users that returned within same week has been increased 10-11% in three months. Aug 20 - Nov 4

Reflection: What I learned

Collaborate with engineers and handoff final design
Challenge myself to think a lot of iterations
Conduct user testings and incorporate user feedback
